Easter Weekend in North Carolina
We thought we'd leave for our summer adventure around now. The boat seemed ready, the new canvas was installed, provisioning had started in earnest (Oh Yes I can stock supplies like a squirrel before the winter), and we both seemed ready too. "Seemed" being the operational word. Michael was to have his pacemaker "battery" (generator) replaced in late March, a very routine intervention ensuring that he would not have any low battery problem later in the summer. Routine this was not to be: an infection was found around his pacemaker and associated leads, and he was transported immediately from our local hospital in New Bern to a larger medical facility in Greenville about 1 hour away. Three surgeries and 9 days later, he was released from the hospital as good as new. However his surgeon did not release him from the area until about 90 days after these surgeries, while he undergoes regular check ups. So we are enjoying times on the boat and at the dock at Matthews Point Marina for an additional 2 months. We are now planning on pushing off the dock near the end of June, immediately after his final medical check up. We have had to abredge our trip up North, but we still plan on making it to the Rideau Canal by early August. We will not spend as much time along the Chesapeake Bay, which we will explore more of on our return trip South in a few years.
